Program Description

This program prepares students for a wide range of careers in landscape contracting, ornamental horticulture, and urban farming. Students who plan to seek a baccalaureate degree at Colorado State University should complete either the Associate of Science in Horticulture Business Management or the Associate of Science in Environmental Horticulture – Landscape Business.

To earn the Horticulture and Landscape Technologies AAS degree students must complete:
• A series of general education courses (communications, natural and physical sciences, social and behavior sciences, business management, and computer technology)
• The Floral Design Certificate or the Horticulture Certificate
• And 20 additional credits of approved electives. Specialty certificates offered by this program may be used to fulfill this requirement. They also provide entry-level career preparation or allow individuals already working in the horticulture industry to upgrade or expand their skill sets.

To earn the Floral Design Certificate, students must complete:
• Introductory Floral Design (FLD 100)
• Advanced Floral Design (FLD 200)
• Capstone (FLD 289)
• Internship (HLT 280) or Cooperative education (HLT 287)
• Annuals, Bulbs, and Grasses (HLT 223) or Interior Plants (HLT 226)
• And three credits of approved mathematics
Floral design courses should be taken in numerical order. HLT 280/HLT 287 may be taken concurrently with, just before, or just after FLD 289. HLT 223 and HLT 226 can be taken at any time.

To earn the Horticulture Certificate, students must complete:
• Introduction to Horticulture (HLT 101)
• Introductory Soil Science (HLT 240)
• Three credits of approved mathematics
• Seven credits of coursework with an HLT or FLD prefix

Using the other Horticulture program certificates and elective coursework to your advantage:

To earn the Horticulture and Landscape Technologies AAS you must complete 20 credits of approved electives.

• We recommend you fulfill this requirement by completing a “specialty” certificate offered by this program plus one or two additional HLT or FLD prefixed courses. See pages 111-115 and 200-203 in the 2018-19 Catalog for a listing of specialty certificates. You can simply complete an additional 20 credits of approved coursework.

• This program allows students who are transferring credits from another college into our program to apply specific non-HLT coursework towards these elective credits. See your advisor for the list of non-HLT courses that may be applied to this degree.

Students planning to transfer to Colorado State University:
• Students planning to complete a baccalaureate degree in Horticulture with a concentration in Horticulture Business at Colorado State University are encouraged to enroll in the Horticulture Business A.S. program at FRCC. This program of study is outlined by the Statewide Horticulture Business Management articulation agreement which can be found at: http://highered.colorado.gov/Academics/Transfers/Agreements/horticulture.pdf
• Students planning to complete a baccalaureate degree in Environmental Horticulture with a concentration in Landscape Business at Colorado State University are encouraged to enroll in the Environmental Horticulture – Landscape Business A.S. program at FRCC.
