Program Description

This program is designed for students wanting to complete a one semester Certificate in Phlebotomy and enter the workforce. Students explore the duties in venipuncture, capillary puncture, and special collection procedures. This program is designed to provide students with the entry-level skills required for a career as a phlebotomist in health care settings. The program is designed to be completed in one semester. Students prepare to sit for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam offered by the National Health Career Association (NHA).

What You Will Learn

Upon completion of the program you will be able to:
1.  Apply entry-level phlebotomy (obtaining blood from the body) knowledge and skills, using national phlebotomy standards, in the Phlebotomist role in the clinical setting
2.  Provide appropriate customer service, adhere to confidentiality laws and follow HIPAA regulations
3.  Follow workplace safety and infection control standards and protocols in all aspects of care, and apply OSHA standards in laboratory settings, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) with blood and body fluid precautions
4.  Use medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology knowledge appropriately as it applies to the phlebotomy setting
5.  Demonstrate knowledge of the circulatory system, and identify the veins used in venipunctures and phlebotomy skills
6.  Properly use standard phlebotomy equipment and supplies, including lancets, butterfly set-ups, and syringes
7.  Demonstrate accuracy in venipuncture techniques, blood collections, specimen collections, age-specific protocols, and lab protocols, and provide quality assurance in all phases of specimen handling and lab protocols
8.  Accurately handle special collections for blood and non-blood specimens, including capillary techniques, finger sticks, and heel sticks, specimen processing, centrifugation, and aliquotin
