Program Description
This program is designed for students wanting to complete a one-year (two semester) Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages K-12 and enter the workforce. Students explore K-12 classroom procedures and techniques in teaching and learning the English language successfully. The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program provides high quality instruction through innovative teaching practices and experiential learning. It prepares teacher leaders to be knowledgeable, creative thinkers, and reflective decision makers. This certificate prepares students for careers as paraeducators or to earn licensure to teach in an elementary or high school classroom. This program is also appropriate for teachers with a bachelor's degree looking to improve their skills teaching English to speakers of other languages.

What You Will Learn
Upon completion of the program you will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the major elements of English (phonology, morphology, syntax, lexis) in order to provide language instruction for English Language Learners (ELLs)
2. Develop, practice and demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary for planning and delivering effective lessons for ESOL students
3. Identify, describe and apply knowledge of current language acquisition theories in the context of teaching and learning English
4. Articulate an understanding of cultural humility and demonstrate cultural humility in the practice of teaching and learning
5. Explain and demonstrate professional behaviors in teaching in the following areas: dress, attitude, communication, attendance, preparation, respectfulness, truthfulness and reliability
6. Demonstrate teaching competence by successfully completing practice teaching experiences that reinforce the program curriculum
7. Demonstrate appropriate work-ethic traits through personal conduct and effective teamwork
8. Complete and reflect on ESL field experiences that may include observation, tutoring, small group work or participation in events
9. Effectively write and present for a variety of audiences including peers, ESOL students and professional audiences
