Program Description

This program is designed for students wanting to complete a one-year (two semester) Certificate in Medical Assistant and enter the workforce. Students explore the administrative and clinical skills required in health care settings. This certificate is designed to prepare individuals for a career in ambulatory health care facilities in both the administrative and clinical areas. Administrative skills are developed in the areas of medical office procedures, written communications, financial management, insurance billing, International Classification of Diseases and Physicians Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding. Clinical skills include assisting with patient intake, physical examinations, diagnostic tests, and treatment procedures including administration of medications and first aid.

What You Will Learn

Upon completion of the program you will be able to:
 1.  Understand the anatomy & physiology, pathophysiology and identify medications, their application and adverse reactions to major body systems
 2.  Understand the legal aspects of medical records and establish a personal and professional code of ethics
 3.  Understand the Electronic Health Record
 4.  Understand and translate medical terminology including abbreviations and use in medical records
 5.  Understand basic billing and coding concepts utilized in a medical office
 6.  Understanding of medical records, front desk activities and office management
 7.  Demonstrate basic routine laboratory skills for collection, handling and examination of laboratory specimens
 8.  Perform activities associated with aiding a physician with clinical duties
 9.  Collaborate with supervised Medical Assistant Internship in a contracted facility
10.  Prepare for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant national exam
